Hammers, Nails, and Drilling

Did you hear all of the Faith Forum last night, the boss asked. My sister had phoned during the second half, but while watching the first part on her TiVO, I mentioned that I had TiVOed it on mine as well.

No, I said, but the part with McCain got really tiresome, really fast. The BW is a straight-line Democrat, I'm an independent who is registered (and usually votes) Republican, and she knows I want to find a reason to like John McCain. Obama talked to the preacher, but McCain talked at him, drilling bumper sticker phrases like "Drill now! Drill here!" at us instead of responding to the questions in a thoughtful manner.

"Why do you suppose, after his experience as a prisoner," she asked, "that John McCain always sounds like he wants to go to war?"

I mentioned that Evan Bayh, on "Face The Nation" this morning, called him "bellicose". Seems to be a good word for McCain. If your only tool is a hammer, I said, every problem is a nail. (Did I mention that Evan Bayh is sounding more and more tiresome these days, too? Sticking to the talking points is what a prospective running mate is supposed to do, but it is so much nicer when people actually talk to you, instead of at you.)

Her jaw dropped at the "hammer" aphorism. "Did you just come up with that, or is that an old phrase that I've never run across before?"

I told her that it was an old phrase - and I appreciated the compliment, that she thought I could come up with it.

My blonde. I think I'll keep her.
