I am told that the ex-cheerleader (age 19) and now an Air Force Security Forces Sniper in this picture was watching a road that lead to a NATO military base when she observed a man digging by the road. She engaged the target, and she shot him.
Turned out he was a bomb maker for the Taliban and he was burying an IED that was to be detonated when a US patrol walked by 30 minutes later. It would have certainly killed and wounded several soldiers.
The interesting fact of this story is the shot was measured at 725 yards.. She shot him as he was bent over burying the bomb. The shot struck him in the butt blowing into the bomb which detonated. He was blown to pieces.
For country folk, that's four-tenths of a mile. City folk don't have a good feel for a mile, so for them 725 yards is more than 7 football fields long. That's a long way off.
The Air Force made this motivational poster of her.

really?
thank you for the thoughtful comment on public transpo on my blog!
her in switzerland the buses have special lanes, and special rights through the lights, so even in my car I have never missed a turn or anything. and they run on electricity, not gas here - all the buses, trams and trains do, and it is very, very quiet as well. it's actually a very good system, as far as these systems go worldwide, probably one of the best. in many towns in switzerland, half the population uses only public transpo, and i only see low usage rates late at night, since it's kind of a dead town at night. i suppose i am just spoiled.
in reference to this post you wrote. is it a joke? did they really make that poster...and misspell earring??
I think so
Environment is spelled wrong, too. If it is a joke, it's a joke on me. I think it's a legit story.
Medical doctors used to be taught that piercing the earlobes improved ones eyesight. They believed this through the 1880s. I'm not sure what convinced them otherwise. Obviously, the lady in the poster has good enough eyesight to shoot a terrorist in the keister at 725 years. I suppose those who made the poster didn't have pierced ears, and couldn't see their spelling errors.
There actually is a word "earing". It's a nautical term, a rope attached to a cringle and used for bending a corner of a sail to a yard, boom, or gaff - or for reefing the sail. (They sew a rope - called the boltrope - into the edge of a sail in order to strengthen it and keep it from tearing. The cringle is a loop in the boltrope used for attaching lines. Reefing is reducing the amount of sail exposed to the wind.)
Earing is also a verb. To ear is to till the soil. "For these two years hath the famine been in the land: and yet there are five years, in the which there shall neither be earing nor harvest." - Genesis 45:6, King James Version.
I didn't know all this ten minutes ago, by the way. It started when I looked up "earing" in the dictionary to see if it might possibly be an acceptable variant spelling. It's not.
Jessica's blog is In Search of Dessert, mentioned briefly in an early blog post.
Good pic, bad narrative.
And now, I know better. There was no motivational poster, and apparently she never shot someone at 725 yards who was planting an IED. I trusted the source I got this from; I should have checked with Snopes anyway.
