Red Candidate, Blue Candidate or White?

It's pretty clear that Pat Toomey is a hawk.

  • He voted "Yes" on the AUMF (Authorization for Use of Military Force in Iraq) in 2002.
  • He voted "Yes" on the Iraq Anniversary resolution in 2004.
  • He voted "No" on Istook amendment of the Kosovo and Southwest Asia Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Act in 1999, that would have prohibited the invasion of Yugoslavia without a declaration of war.

And it's pretty clear that Joe Sestak is a hawk. He was a professional warrior, a (three-star) Vice-Admiral before he was retired as a (two-star) Rear Admiral in 2005. He supported ramping up the fighting in Afghanistan in 2009, and the drone attacks in Pakistan.

The Fighting In Afghanistan

We've been fighting Afghanistan for a decade - which is long than any war we've ever fought - and there's no end in sight. Yesterday, five US soldiers died.

This is a particularly Pennsylvanian issue; a disproportionately high number of soldiers come from Pennsylvania, making us the Second State in military recruitment. Why we tolerate this bloodbath is beyond me. We're accomplishing nothing.

It's like saying that we'll shut down the Mississippi river as soon as the midwest is drained dry. It keeps raining, and the river keeps flowing. And in Iraq and Afghanistan, the blood keeps flowing.

Stupid Wars

When Obama ran, he said he wasn't against all war, only stupid war. But both Iraq and Afghanistan are stupid wars. There's nothing to be gained, and no defined purpose. All we're doing is reducing unemployment by killing off young able-bodied adults.

But it's impossible to vote for peace by going blue or red. The flag is red, white and blue. We need a white candidate, it seems.

I'd run for the Senate as an independent, but my wife thinks my sex life is already exciting enough without involving pages or staffers. Hmmm. Maybe I should take up golf instead?
