"I Almost Regret That Now"

“The Internet has a lot of nasty things on it about me and I didn’t mean any harm. I’m no home wrecker. I was just trying to be funny, and I almost regret that now. [My teenage daughter] yelled at me. She said I embarrassed her. I was just being funny.”
-- Luann Haley

When Obama stopped for wings in Buffalo, Chaffee resident Luann Haley initiated a conversation with him by asking for a hug and saying, “You’re a hottie with a smokin’ little body.”

Country singer Toby Keith sings “She’s a Hottie,” with a refrain that goes, “Hottie, she’s a hottie, got a smokin’ little body.” Not everyone would be delighted to be compared to the hard-partying slut of the song. On the other hand, Toby Keith supported Obama in 2008.

In any case, for that, Luann Haley has been called the "Buffalo Cougar". For heaven's sake, Haley is 45, and Obama is 48. Aren't cougars defined as older women who approach younger men?

For The Record

  • For the record, Luann Haley is a federal employee, working next door collecting overdue student loans.
  • For the record, Luann Haley is a Republican.
  • For the record, Luann Haley is a single mom.
  • For the record, Obama laughed at it, realizing that no offense was intended, and enjoyed the compliment. He asked for a photo of the hug to send to his wife, and he shouted out "Eat your heart out, Michelle."

The surprise, of course, is that Rupert Murdoch's employees are calling her a homewrecker. They normally blame everything on him. And since they're already complaining that he's playing too much golf, accusing him of being heterosexual seems even more juicy than claiming playing softball makes you a lesbian.

The Real Surprise

But the real surprise is that Obama's not catching flak for eating Buffalo wings in Buffalo at Duff's Famous Wings. You see, there's a big rivalry in Buffalo, between Anchor Bar, which claims to have invented Buffalo wings, and Duff's, the upstart who claims to have perfected them. (Ivano Toscani, who manages the Anchor Bar, kiddingly says it's because he's a Republican.)

But then, Obama can probably handle that controversy. He's a Chicago White Sox fan, and everyone know that the Cubs are the Chicago baseball team, yet Obama had little difficulty winning a Senate seat in mostly pasty-white Illinois.
