Whup. Wrong kind of boxing. This watercolor by Keelan McMorrow depicts John L. Sullivan, who pretty much instated the rules of modern boxing matches. It's a brutal sport today, but it was even more brutal before.
Back to Boxing Day. It's regifting, in a way. The rich folk would box up their leftover food from a lavish Christmas day feast and give them to the poor on December 26. Many of the poor eating those orts were the servants in the rich folks' homes.
The Holiday
The holiday is mostly celebrated in British Empire countries like Canada. Here in the US, we give $65,000/year tax breaks to the rich, and allow the unemployed another year to collect their maximum 99 weeks of unemployment before they get tossed onto the streets, having lost their homes to foreclosure.
I found the artwork on a site where it's available for sale as a greeting card, matted print, laminated print, mounted print or framed print. Might look nice on the wall of the family room, as a reminder to put on your gloves before having family over for Christmas.
